ASSIGNMENT #2.1 : LCD PROJECTOR

Consider your team is developing a new LCD projector. Working in a team, make your team estimate of :
1.       The annual unit sold
2.       Development time
3.       Size of development team
4.       Development cost

LCD PROJECTOR PRODUCTION

The usage of LCD projector in these days is increasing. It has been getting attention in most of education places, companies, shops and many more. The demands for this LCD projector have doubled due to the pleasure that it offers. Thus our company plan to produce brand new LCD projector which not only offer various functions but also eco-friendly to the environment.

Annual Unit Sold

The production for the first year will require our company to work harder since this in the introduction of our product to the market. The recognition from customers will usually take several times. Thus we need to convince the customer about our product quality and reliability.
For the first year of production, we plan expect the annual sold could reach 30,000 units per year. This means that 2,500 units will be sold in one month. Our market target will be Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The product will be market in the electronics and electronics store in all countries mention above. We do not put much target for the first year since we have more experience competitors such as Toshiba, Epson, Sony and many more. Thus, it is important for us to get customer recognition and trust for this early year.

Development Time

As consumer goods companies, we much consider about LCD Projector’s Development Time. The product starts to be developed through product development process until the product is reached in the market. It is extremely important to be the first in the market as it can bring us to the significant benefits. So, we estimate the development time for new LCD projector is about 6-12 months. However, accelerating the time to market for new products is a strategic imperative. Therefore, we are planning to reduce the product development time to make the product fast available in the market. Hence, it is all about the time to market.

Size of Development Team

LCD projector production is generally developed in many phases. This usually requires up to 50 men in a team of various responsibilities, such as designers, artists, programmers, testers, operators, and etc. The projector productions go through several development stages until finally being released. New LCD projector are advertised, marketed, and showcased at related carnival promotion.

This project can be divided into three main phases; designation, development and evaluation stage. In the design team, we estimate 7-person to be involved in the project coming from various background of knowledge mainly from technical, and also some marketing and economical expertises so that the product that is going to be produced satisfies not only the functional needs, but also can become a cost efficient and marketable product. We choose to have many technical people because there are so many possibilities of boards, OS’s, firmware versions, and some software that needs a precise attention and that, consumes time which is also a big constraint in any project.

After a good design has been agreed and approved in the design stage, the product will be developed and built by the manufacturing people in the development stage with the help from 30 operators to shorten the production time. The rest of the number of people involved in this project will be doing the inspection and evaluation job on the products that have been produced to ensure it achieves the standard and also to improve the quality.

Development Cost

Development cost for the production of LCD will cover all the cost related to the making of product. It will be in form of materials cost, labour cost and manufacturing process cost. The materials used in the making of LCD will be glass, plastic, stainless steel and aluminium. That will be the materials for making body cover, light sources cover, stand, screw and many more.
The labour cost consist of the amount of money that needs to be pay for the working team from the designer to the assembly men. The manufacturing cost will cover the cost for manufacturing parts, purchasing parts and assembly processes. Since our company still new, the production costs will not really high due to medium quantity of LCD will be produced. The estimation for all costs is as follow:

Materials cost
RM 700,000
Labor cost
RM 800,000
Manufacturing process cost            v
RM 1,200,000
Total Cost
RM 2,700,000
